Meiji Restoration, known contemporaneously as the Honorable Restoration Goisshin, and also known as the Meiji Renovation, Revolution, Reform, or Renewal, was an event that restored practical imperial rule to the Empire of Japan in 1868 under Emperor Meiji. Although there were ruling Emperors before the Meiji Restoration, the events restored practical abilities and consolidated the political system under the Emperor of Japan.[2] The goals of the restored government were expressed by the new Emperor in the Charter Oath. The Restoration led to enormous changes in Japan's political and social structure and spanned both the late Edo period (often called the Bakumatsu) and the beginning of the Meiji period. During the Restoration, Japan rapidly industrialized and adopted western ideas and production methods.

  • 5 Sen, Monetized By Government Of Japan.
  • This delicate 5 Sen coin was struck during the reign of Emperor Meiji, a transformative era when Japan emerged from centuries of isolation and embraced sweeping modernization. From 1873 to 1892, these silver coins reflected a young nation forging its identity by blending ancient imperial symbols with new industrial minting techniques.
  • The obverse features a fierce dragon coiled within a beaded circle, symbolizing power and the emperor’s divine mandate. Above the dragon, the inscription reads “Great Japan” and the year of the Meiji era, while the denomination sits neatly below. This mythical beast reflects Japan’s cultural ties to East Asian legends of strength, prosperity, and protection.
  • On the reverse, the imperial chrysanthemum — the royal seal of the Emperor — crowns the design, signifying the unbroken line of the Japanese monarchy. Below, graceful paulownia branches with heart-shaped leaves encircle the denomination “5 Sen” in elegant kanji. Together, these elements evoke harmony and natural beauty cherished in Japanese art.
  • Produced at the Japan Mint in Osaka, these coins bear witness to Japan’s rapid industrial growth and its steps onto the world stage. Some examples, like the Year 25 issue, were even struck for international exhibitions such as the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Each coin holds a piece of Meiji’s vision — progress anchored in tradition.
